Using Horses in Treatment to Improve Psychological Health

The use of horses in treatment can be used to benefit client’s psychological health as well as other goals.  This website discusses the use of horses in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy, however they can also be used as a therapeutic tool in equine assisted psychotherapy.  Occupational therapists as well as psychotherapists often work with individuals struggling with their psychological well-being and mental health.  Regardless of the treating therapist, many individuals who struggle with a disability, illness, or injury do experience some emotional struggles and often benefit from this treatment in multiple ways.

The horse and surrounding environment of the session is very different from traditional therapy settings and is often calming.  Research has shown that physiological effects of the rhythmic movement of the horse’s gait as well as the surrounding environment can have a positive impact on psychological well-being, decreasing depressed and anxious feelings (18).  By participating in the therapy session and riding the horse many individuals also experience a sense of accomplishment and empowerment.  Studies have shown the use of horses to improve clients’ self esteem, confidence, self-worth, self-awareness, anxiety, social skills, empathy, mood, behavior, and motivation (8).  This treatment can be very fun and engaging as a component of a treatment plan and clients are often excited to participate.
