Communication and
Social Interaction

Communication and Social Interaction

Communication and social interaction is very important not only in helping with participation in daily activities but in adding to our quality of life.  We are all social beings and personal relationships and our social support are both important aspects of our life.  There are many disabilities and injuries that can negatively impact communication and social interaction.  This is often an important goal for these individuals to work on and can be improved using horses in therapy sessions.

Using Horses in Treatment to Improve Communication and Social Interaction

Research supports the use of horses in treatment to improve social interaction, especially with individuals who have autism (12).  The environment of a session has been shown to create a calming effect decreasing the client’s level of anxiety and encouraging social participation (12).  The multisensory experience of a treatment session that incorporates the horse is also motivating for the client to participate in activities working towards their goals (12).  The activities to the right can be used in during the treatment to work towards the client’s communication and social interaction goals.
